Home care after dental implant surgery

Successful oral surgery depends on keeping the mouth as clean as possible.

You should start brushing your other teeth the day after surgery, and begin to carefully clean the surgical site with toothbrush once tenderness permits(few days after).

Do not spit or rinse for 24 hours after the surgery.

Spitting or rinsing will cause negative pressure in the mouth that will irritate the clot formed around the wound area, and it will slow the healing and there will be increased risk of contamination. Avoid rinsing, spitting, and touching the mouth for 24 hours after surgery.

Avoid hot foods and drinks for 24 hours after the surgery.

 These precautions will give your mouth a better chance to heal properly.

You should apply an ice pack to your face over the area where surgery was done for 6-7 hours.

İt will help minimize the amount of swelling. You should apply it in 5 minute intervals.

You should use the medications prescribed by your dentist.

You should follow the intructions of your dentist strictly.

You can start brushing and rinsing after 24 hours.

You should avoid chewing with the area where surgery was done. 

There may be pain for 1-2 days after surgery. 

You can use pain medications prescribed by your dentist to minimize the pain. 

There may be swelling for 3-4 days or it can happen in the later stages.

Can i smoke after implant surgery?

You should avoid smoking for at least 24 hours. Smoking is the most important factor in implant failure. 

Will there be pain after implant surgery?

There will be a little pain after imolant surgery. İt can be avoided by using pain medications. You should consult your dentist İf there is still pain after taking pain medications.

Can i eat after implant surgery?

You should follow the instruction on what you can eat after the surgery. We advice you to eat soft foods for 2-3 days. You should strictly avoid eating anything till the numbness goes away.

What can i eat after dental implant surgery? 

For 2 days after surgery, drink liquids and eat soft foods only. Such as milkshakes, eggnog, yogurt, cooked cereals, cottage cheese, smooth soups, mashed potatoes, refried beans, ice cream, pudding, fruit smoothies and protein shakes. On day 3 after surgery, eat soft foods that do not require much chewing, such as macaroni and cheese, cooked noodles, soft-boiled /scrambled/ poached eggs and soft sandwiches. Avoid tough or crunchy foods, such as pizza, rice, popcorn, and hamburger. Avoid spicy and acidic foods. Most patients may resume their normal diet 7 days after surgery.

Will my face become swollen after implant surgery?

There may be swelling after  implant surgery. İt is normal for tissues to swell after trauma. The swelling will increase the first 2-3 days, soon after it will begin to subside and will disappear after 1 week.

What can i use as a pain medication?

You can use pain medications prescribed by your dentist. You should consult your dentist if the pain still persists.

When will i get my teeth? 

İt depends on the surgery done and the type of bone where the surgery was done. Usually the prosthetic rehabilitation will be done after 3-4 months

Are dental implants dangerous? 

Dental implants are not dangerous if the patient doesn’t have serious health issues and if the surgery is done properly. İt is far better alternative than bridges and dentures.
